Recent work

12/11/2024

Part of my recent photography series Collision/Ignition. Here is Too Fast To See, 1, 2, and 3. These images were created in-camera, double exposure. They represent a collision, something fast and shaken. It is beautiful, but something isn't right. It is delicacy paired with violence. This work calls upon chance to examine the idea of impermanence. It encompasses grief, sudden death, vulnerability, and beauty.

Some in-progress collages.

Art Video Screenshots

I've been watching Youtube art videos for years now and it has enriched my life immensely.  I'm hooked.  Art lectures and documentaries, etc., etc.  Here are some stills I thought needed to be captured.

The very beginning of a torn paper project.  Torn off, ripped away.

A detail of my recent painting:  A cobalt blue tarantula!  Fuzzy beauty.

Trip to BAMPFA on Feb 4, 2024.  LOVE the Bird peice.  It is about a warbler that went extinct in 2022.  The label is in the folder of pictures: photos.app.goo.gl/38WSUe3sL1vYyhXBA

I didn't get label shots, ahh!  Maybe because there weren't any.  So missing some artist's names, damn.

How do I narrow down all the artlife notes since I last posted?

It is always a fraction of who I am, what I see and want to capture, make, and refer to.  It overwhelms me with the innumerable amount of thoughts, ideas, and images seen in one day.   But I am getting better at accepting that I can only reflect on and show a sliver of it all.  I must, or I'll lose my mind, I've been close.  So here are a few slivers.

New studio!!!
More inspiring artists
More museum and gallery visits
More sketches
Finished works:  Birthstain, Lace Goddess, Flower Mountain, a few minor collage works, Nigerian Headdress...
Rejections

I absolutely LOVE my new studio.  100% positive change.

it's been too long. time goes running.

I have so much in folders, bookmarked, etc; pictures, notes.  I must get it all on here.  But for now, there's this.

a snapshot in the studio

ARTLIFE LIFEART.  Beauty in the street.  Art is everywhere, whether made by someone's hand or occurring just by being.

While walking in Oakland late at night I found a plastic bag that was ripped and contorted and thickened in a way, it had become another sort of being.  I traced it on a wall and painted it.  I was going to go back and touch it up just a bit, as the perfectionist I am, but it was gone before I saw it in the light.  The bag is in my car right now, being its art self.  I'm not finished with it yet.

recent engagements

Marc Quinn
I'm stoked to revisit his work.  He continues to inspire me with the (new to me) work that is a total confrontation with the visceral bodies we live in.  The body, flowers, bodies missing limbs, life/death, beauty, biology.  Of course i'm interested.

All images below are screenshots and notes from the video:

Life is short, the art long.
I forgot who said it, but it's a statement I've always carried with me.

Art lectures, art documentaries, art images, art talks have kept me company and touched my heart over these covid years.  I'm so grateful to engage in this way (thanks YouTube).  It has brought me into knowledge that revisits senses I felt in my college days.  I miss that time so much.  Complete art absorption.  I've longed for my life to be like that again ever since.  I want to talk about it, make it, engage it, write about it, study it, learn history and new techniques, see it, hear it, move it, bathe in it, create alone and with others. Feel it inside me like loud music.  Live it totally to the hilt, in every moment.   That is not easy to do, especially alone, out of art school, without a community studio space - I miss Merchants of Reality!  It's hard to keep much in San Francisco; art friends, art spaces.

Art museums are my happy place, I don't know what I'd do without them.  I must post all my visits from last year!
